What exactly is Microsoft Fabric?

In the official documentation it states: "Microsoft Fabric is an all-in-one analytics solution for enterprises that covers everything from data movement to data science, real-time analytics, and business intelligence." All data and analytics products are unified in one product and one data lake: OneLake. Fabric is implemented as a SaaS service for all types of data, analytics, and BI functions, including: data integration, business intelligence, Synapse data engineering, data warehousing, data science, and real-time analytics. The platform offers comprehensive analytics capabilities designed for seamless collaboration. Each application is tailored to a specific persona and task.

Why is Microsoft Fabric shaking up the industry?


Although Microsoft Fabric is still in preview and expected to launch officially in July, the excitement in the industry is already widespread. The entire data journey—from collecting and storing data to transformation and analysis—takes place on a single SaaS platform based on a new data lake called OneLake. All users work on the same data foundation and save their data as Parquet Delta files, meaning they use the same data independently for their own tasks in the data journey, whether they are data engineers, data analysts, or report consumers. The application is intuitive. Every employee in a company can not only be involved but can collaborate seamlessly—without technical hurdles or organizational silos. This is something we haven't seen before.


What is the foundation of Microsoft Fabric?


Azure Synapse and Power BI are becoming even more closely integrated in Microsoft Fabric. Power BI users will feel right at home in Fabric, as the SaaS foundation it is built upon is the Power BI service. Fabric workspaces behave just like Power BI workspaces, but with more item types available. Navigation works exactly the same way as in Power BI. Users can collaborate and share Fabric items and workspaces just as they do in Power BI. New Fabric workloads use the capacity-based compute model of Power BI Premium. Fabric administration also works just like Power BI administration; the Fabric admin portal is the evolution of the Power BI admin portal.


The new Fabric workloads are essentially updates and improvements to existing Azure data services. These include the established PaaS services Azure Synapse, Azure Data Factory, and Azure Data Explorer. They all now run on the shared SaaS foundation of Fabric. Users already familiar with these services will immediately be comfortable with the new features in Fabric. Working with pipelines and notebooks or writing SQL and KQL queries works exactly the same way in Fabric, just in a new context.


What is OneLake?


OneLake is a single, unified, logical data lake for the entire organization. It is similar to OneDrive. OneLake is also automatically provisioned with every Microsoft Fabric tenant and is designed to be the single location for all of a company's analytical data. Where data might previously have been moved back and forth across different services using separate analysis tools, in Fabric, it all resides in OneLake. OneLake is, so to speak, the heart of Fabric.


OneLake is built on ADLS Gen2. Users can store any file type and use the same APIs they use to connect to ADLS Gen2. All data can be used whenever and in whatever form it is needed. Data is ingested and stored only once. Users access the central data, process it in the warehouse using SQL, for example, or analyze it as a table dataset in Power BI, while changes to the data are saved as separate Parquet Delta files during further processing. Storage and compute are decoupled—a huge plus for Microsoft Fabric, as it significantly increases speed in downstream processing and simplifies the handling of large datasets many times over, especially when considering real-time data processing.


Can I use Microsoft Fabric for AI applications?


Fabric is fully integrated with the Azure OpenAI Service. With Copilot, users can use natural language to create data flows, data pipelines, and code, or even generate entire functions. AI models can also be created here, and results can be visualized.


Who can work with Microsoft Fabric?


Everyone. Data scientists, data engineers, BI experts, business users—you and me. Until now, every user has worked with their own tools and skills, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. As a result, most projects required significant integration effort to ensure that the output of the various tools and the linking of results worked across the entire value chain. Errors were inevitable, and enormous coordination processes were necessary, often requiring compromises.


In Microsoft Fabric, everyone works together on a single data foundation. Every user utilizes datasets for their own purposes and combines them with the attributes relevant to their specific context. Everyone works natively with the same data in OneLake. This creates added value because no one has to deal with building integrations to make different tools work together anymore. Every user and every team can create their own workspaces and share them with others as needed. Data from one workspace can be integrated into another and vice versa. Data is simply stored once in OneLake and can be used as often as desired in the subsequent analytics process without duplication.


Do I need Microsoft Fabric?


Maybe. In any case, the hype is justified. For years, users have been demanding exactly this kind of platform that allows for a seamless data journey, from integration all the way to data dashboarding.


My advice: Wait for the preview. Continue testing whether the technological offering makes sense for your use case. Take inspiration from the name Azure Fabric: start by loosely weaving together the first layers of your data analysis and gradually strengthen your basics into a solid structure. Keep an eye on the development of Fabric so you don't lose the thread. It could be a game changer.
